Feb. 22, 2011
MOBILE, Ala. -- Paced by Jonathan Fly's three-under-par 69, the University of Memphis golf team turned in a 284 (-4) in the final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Course. "The conditions were perfect for scoring, and we played well," University of Memphis head coach Grant Robbins said." Fly's 54-hole total (218) earned him a share of sixth position individually. Steve Lee also posted a top-10 individual finish, tallying a tournament-total 219 (73-75-71) to land in a tie for ninth place. Jack Belote posted his 11th top-20 finish as a Tiger with rounds of 75-74-71. Grant Milner (77-75-73--225) and Carlson Cox (81-75-73--229) finished in 41st and 59th, respectively. Memphis finished sixth with rounds of 301-297-284--882. "We just need to do a better job of finishing off rounds. Once we learn to value every shot, we can do pretty well," Robbins said. Jason Millard torched Magnolia Grove Crossings Course Tuesday with a nine-under-par 63 to capture medalist honors and lead Middle Tennessee to an 11-stroke victory over Kentucky. Millard (70-72-63--205) beat out co-runners-up Chase Parker of Kentucky (73-69-70--212) and Jack Hiluta (74-72-66--212) by seven strokes. Kentucky (293-302-279--874) finished second behind Parker's performance, while No. 48 Charlotte (293-298-288--879) tied Akron (301-291-287--879) for third. Memphis returns to the course March 7 when it travels to Lafayette, La. for the Louisiana Classics.
