March 22, 2009
The University of Memphis men's golf team is in 15th after one round at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The tournament is being held at the par-72, 7,239-yard Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course, with South Alabama serving as the host school. Jack Belote led the way for the Tigers, carding an opening round 77, good for 34th place. Brandon Bunn fired a 78, while Brad Benjamin posted a 79. Stefan Erdidi and Jordan Payne recorded rounds of 82 and 83, respectively. On a day in which only two players scored under par, Belote was able to put together a solid round and leave himself in position to make a run over the final two rounds. Currently, he is only two shots out of the top-20 and three out of the top 10. The Tigers' team score of 316 has them in 15th place following the first of three rounds. There is a three-way tie for first with a 299 total, as NMSU, USM and Toledo all posted that score, while MSU and Xavier are tied for fourth one stroke behind the trio. Kevin Lozares of New Mexico State leads the individual competition after firing a two-under-par 70 in round one. Wes Carter of Southern Miss is one stroke behind after posting a 71. Sixteen teams are competing in the tournament. Second round play will begin at 7:30 a.m. off the first tee.
