AUBURN, Ala. - Sophomore Ian Rochester shot a 2-under 70 to position himself in a tie for first in the opening round of the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate on Friday, helping the University of Memphis men's golf team finish the day in third. Rochester is the reigning champion of the tournament, winning it in 2005 with a 56-hole 211.

Memphis shot a 296 and is six-strokes behind tournament host and current leader Auburn University. Charlotte is in second with a 292 and Southeastern Louisiana is fourth with a 297 among the 12-team tournament field.

Rochester is tied with Auburn's Andrew Medley for first after carding a 1-under 35 in both the front and back nine. Southeastern Louisiana's Peter O'Keeffe is one stroke behind for third with a 71. The 2-under 70 is the lowest round for Rochester this spring and matches his season low from the fall. Last year Rochester set a career low and a then second-lowest program score of 65 in the opening round of the Billy Hitchcock.

Senior Mike Regenold shot the Tiger's second lowest score in the day with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 12th. One-stroke behind Regenold, junior Lewis Clarke is tied for 22nd with a 75. Sophomore Keven Fortin-Simard in tied for 37th with a 77 and sophomore Robbie Greenwell is tied for 42nd after shooting a 78.

Memphis will play the second round of the three-round tournament on Saturday. The final round will be on Sunday.
