MEMPHIS, Tenn. –University of Memphis redshirt sophomore Grant Milner shot a tournament third-round low of 70 and sophomore Will Pearson finished tied for fifth overall to help lead the Tigers to a second-place finish at the 2012 Memphis Intercollegiate Tuesday. Memphis finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 893.

It was Memphis’ best finish of the 2012 spring season, and its second-straight top-five showing. The Tigers placed third at last week’s BancorpSouth Intercollegiate in Jackson, Miss.

The Tigers entered Tuesday’s final round six back of leader Kennesaw State (593-599), but made a charge on the final day. Milner’s 70 pulled Memphis to within two shots, and Pearson saved a bogey on the 18th hole to cut the Kennesaw State margin to one.

The Owls’ Matt Nagy put Kennesaw State up two shots with a birdie on No. 16, but shot a double-bogey on No. 18 to pull the Owls back into a tie with Memphis.

Kennesaw State’s Ben Greene then birdied the final hole to give the Owls the Memphis Intercollegiate title by a slim one-stroke margin of 892 to 893. Greene won individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 72-72-71—215.

Pearson led a quartet of Memphis golfers finishing in the top-20 with a fifth-place showing. He shot a 72-73-76—221. Memphis was the only team in the tournament to have four golfers place in the top-20.

On the strength of his tournament third-round low of 70, Milner placed in a tie for 15th, shooting a 78-77-70—225. Redshirt senior Jonathan Fly (75-77-75) and senior Jack Belote (71-76-80) tied for 18th, with both shooting a three-round total of 227. Junior Steve Lee placed 33rd with a score of 78-81-73—232.

Other Tigers competing as individuals were redshirt junior Carlson Cox (36th; 77-81-75—233), junior Lexus Keoninh (44th; 78-78-79—235), redshirt freshman Alex Hoffman (45th; 75-82-79—236), sophomore Erwan Vieilledent (63rd; 81-82-82—245) and redshirt freshman Cory Gaylord (63rd: 78-86-81—245).

After a week off from competition, the Tigers return to action Apr. 22-24 at the 2012 Conference USA Championships, which are slated to be held in Texarkana, Ark.
