Men's Golf 10th Through First Round

AUBURN, Ala. - The University of Memphis men's golf team is currently 10th in a tough field through the first 18 holes of the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate at Auburn, Friday. Junior Alan Weant, who transferred to Memphis from Auburn in 2001, and junior David Jeans, who hails from Florence, Alabama, both lead Memphis with a pair of four-over 76s, tying them for 31st overall. Auburn's Tyler McKeever leads the field at four under (68) after firing a 33 on his opening nine holes. UAB's Natahan Turner also fired a 33 on his opening nine holes to move into a tie for second with College of Charleston's Bruce McDonald at three under (69). Auburn was the only team to shoot under par, firing a 287 on the 6,689-yard Saugahatchee Country Club course. College of Charleston is second with a 292, while the University of Arkansas and Georgia State University are tied for third overall at 294 (six over). Senior Michael Prieur is one stroke behind his U of M teammates at five over. He is currently in a five-way tie for 42nd, while teammate Clayton Ellis is in a four way tie for 47th at six over. Sophomore Richard Jones rounds out the Tiger team with an opening round 79. Jones is currently tied for 51st overall. The Tigers will compete at the Billy Hitchcock tournament Saturday and Sunday to round out their regular season. Memphis will compete in the Conference USA Championships Apr. 21-23 at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, just outside of Tampa, Florida. The Lake Jovita Golf & County Club was named one of the Top 10 New Golf Courses by Golf Digest.
