Tigers Finish Fourth at 2009 Conference USA Championship

Jordan Payne fired a final round four-under-par 68 to lead the University of Memphis men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the 2009 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship hosted by UCF and the Central Florida Sports Commission. The event was held at the par-72 7,152 yard Red Tail Golf Course. Payne's round featured an eagle, coupled with six birdies and three bogeys and propelled him to an 11th place finish in his final round as a Tiger. Fellow senior Brad Benjamin posted a final round 73, good for a three day total of 214 and a tie for ninth. Jack Belote also finished in the top-20, carding a final round 75 to leave him in a tie for 17th. Brandon Bunn (71) and Jeff Hall (74) finished 27th and 41st respectively. The Tigers fired a two-under-par team total of 286 in the third round to give them a three day total of 866 (289-291-286), their lowest three day mark of the season. UCF's Simon Ward fired his second consecutive 68 to become the 2009 Conference USA individual champion. Ward's three-day total of 205 topped teammate Blayne Barber by one stroke. UCF also claimed its first team title since joining the conference in 2004. The Knights shot 18-under-par as a team for three days, giving them a six stroke victory over SMU. For the Tigers, the Conference USA Championship marks the end of the 2008-09 season. Competition will resume next fall.
