Belote Guides Memphis to Day One Lead at C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. –Jack Belote posted a 68 (-4) to grab a share of the individual lead and guide Memphis into first place after one round at the Conference USA Men’s Golf Championship. “The guys played really well today and really finished strong, going seven-under on the last three holes,” Memphis head coach Grant Robbins said. Belote, who started on No. 10 with the rest of the Tigers, carded an even-par 36 on his first nine holes before reeling off four birdies in his final eight holes to finish with a 68. He is tied with Max Buckley of SMU for the individual lead. Jonathan Fly also had a strong showing at Texarkana Country Club, turning in four birdies and an eagle en route to a three-under-par 69. Fly is tied with Curtis Reed of Houston for third position individually. Will Pearson turned in three birdies, including his final two holes of the day, and three bogeys bogies on the way to an even-par 72 and a share of 10th position. Steve Lee (73) and Grant Milner (78) are in ties for 21st and 45th, respectively. Memphis, ranked No. 40 in the latest Golfstat rankings, opened up a two-shot lead over No. 42 SMU by posted a six-under-par team score of 282 Sunday. Marshall was the only other school to finish under par, carding a 286 (-2) to finish in third after one round. No. 23 UCF (290) is in fourth position while No. 34 UAB and Houston are tied for fifth with first round scores of 292. “We just have to keep an aggressive mindset, play one hole at a time and see what happens,” Robbins said. The 2012 Conference USA Men’s Golf Championship continues tomorrow, April 23 at Texarkana Country Club.
