Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Memphis men's golf team got its 2004-05 season off to a very impressive start on Saturday at the Michigan Radrick Farms Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Michigan at the Radrick Farms Country Club. The Tigers completed second round play with a two-round score of 578, in second place and just two strokes off the lead. First place Purdue leads the tournament with a 576. The Tigers shot a first round 297, which tied them for third place behind Iowa and Purdue after one round. They then shot a second round 281, the lowest team round of the afternoon to rise into second. They lead third-place Wisconsin by four strokes.

Individually, the Tigers were led by two freshman at the top of the leaderboard. Keven Fortin-Simard shot a first round 71 to tie for third and then came back to fire a second round 69, giving him a 4-under par 140 on the tournament, just two strokes off the lead, which is currently held by Joel Sjoholm of Georgia State who shot a 138 (70-68).

Fellow freshman Andy Shiels and senior Allan Thomas both fired a two-round total of 145, both shooting 75 in the morning and 70 in the afternoon. Justin Miers shot a 4-over 148 (76-72) to round out the Tiger golfers that count in the scoring while UM's final player, Clayton Ellis, shot a 152 (78-74).

"The guys played very well today, especially the way we came back in the second round after getting off to a bit of a slow start," said Memphis coach Grant Robbins. "Everybody got off to a good start in the second round and held on to it through it. They guys have been played solid since they've been here. I had a lot of confidence in the two freshman so I put them at the top of the lineup. Keven hit the ball extremely well today."

The final round will be played tomorrow morning.
