Sept. 12, 2010
HATTIESBURG, Miss.--The University of Memphis golf team is set to open its 2010-11 campaign this weekend at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event will be contested at the par-72 6,850 yard Hattiesburg Country Club and hosted by Southern Miss. Memphis finished second in the event last year, posting team scores of 277-285-284 (846), finishing just one stroke behind champion Southeastern Louisiana. Jonathan Fly led the way for Memphis with rounds of 69-69-71. His three-day, four-under-par total earned him runner-up honors individually. 15 schools will be competing this week: Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Kennesaw State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Memphis, Mississippi State, Rice, South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, Troy, Whicita State, and Winthrop. "We look forward to getting started this week," Memphis head coach Grant Robbins said. ""The team has worked very hard this summer and we had an extremely competitive qualifying. We just want to keep getting better each and everday, and I really think this can be a great year." The Sam Hall Intercollegiate is named for former Southern Miss golfer and coach, Sam Hall, who lettered at the school form 1955 to 1958 and later headed the golf program on two separate occasions.
