MALIBU, Calif. - With ash and soot raining down on Saticoy Country Club just north of Malibu, Calif., and battling swirling Santa Ana winds, 12 teams struggled through the first round of Pepperdine's Club Glove Intercollegiate. While two golfers-Memphis' Ian Rochester and UC Santa Barbara's Brian Hollenbeck-had their rounds cut short as the afternoon grew dark, the Tigers stand in 8th place on the leaderboard with first and second-round scores of 325 and 314 on an ash-covered course.
Robbie Greenwell's team leading 77 was good enough for a tie for 12th place after the first round, as the field averaged just over 80 for the round. The first round saw 68 scorecards with double bogeys and 28 with triple bogey or higher. Pepperdine's 12-over par 300 led the field. The Waves' Andrew Putnam and Jason D'Amore of Loyola Marymount led the first-round field with a 71. They were the only golfers to turn in a score below par. No one had as much success in the second round.
The second round wan't much better, as double and triple bogeyes continued to dot socrecards, but eight teams improved their scores in the second round. Memphis made the greatest stride, shaving 11 strokes off its first round total to jump four spots on the leaderboard to eighth.
Robbie Greenwell shot a one over-par 73 in the second round to move into third place individually. Ian Rochester's second-round 74 has him in a tie for 12th.
Brandon Bunn (82, 85) and Jeff Hall (85, 82) stand in 55th and Jordan Payne (87, 89) is in 62nd after two rounds of play.
Pepperdine (300, 306) leads the field by eight strokes.
