Nov. 9, 2009
The University of Memphis men’s golf team currently sits in T11 after one round of play at the St. Mary’s College Invitational. Jonathan Fly paced the Tigers with an opening round 74 at the par-72, 6,857 yard Poppy Hills Golf Course. Second round play was suspended due to darkness and will be completed tomorrow morning. “The guys are hitting it pretty well,” said Tiger head coach Grant Robbins.” But, we have just really struggled on the greens. We just need to finish off the second round strong tomorrow morning and get some momentum going into the final round.” Fly’s 74 leaves him in a tie for 28th individually. Carlson Cox, who is coming a career low finish of fourth at the Memphis Intercollegiate, posted a first round 75, good for T37. Steve Lee and Jack Belote are tied for 49th position after turning in opening round 76’s. Lexus Keoninh is in T68 after a first round 78. “I feel we are really close to having a breakthrough round,” said Coach Robbins. Denver leads all teams after posting a three-under-par team total of 285 in round one. San Diego and Oregon State are tie two strokes back in second. Espen Kofstand of Denver leads the individual competition after firing a five-under-par 67 in the first round. Diego Velasquez (Oregon State), Ben Murray (San Diego), and Taylor Coffman (Nevada) are three strokes back in second after posting 70’s in round one. Players will complete the second round tomorrow morning before starting the third and final round.
