MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After a rough start to the spring season, the University of Memphis men's golf team looks to get back on track with a trip to Mobile, Ala., Feb. 18-19, for the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of South Alabama.
The Tigers have attended the event every year since it began in 2008. Last season, Memphis finished runner-up and one stroke out of first with a 5-under-par 859. Former Tigers Jack Belote and Jonathan Fly led the squad with third-place finishes, while all five golfers finished in the top-30 in the leaderboard.
"We are looking forward to competing against a very strong field again this week," said head coach Grant Robbins. "The course is in great shape and will be a great opportunity for us to see how we match up against some of the best teams in the country."
In the field, 12 of last year's 15 teams will return to Mobile. The competition will include Akron, Arkansas State, No. 27 Auburn, No. 19 Illinois, Illinois State, No. 37 Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 14 LSU, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, No. 46 Mississippi State, No. 50 South Alabama, Southern Miss, No. 17 Vanderbilt and No. 23 Wake Forest.
Memphis will be represented by senior Steve Lee, juniors Grant Milner and Will Pearson, sophomore Cory Gaylord and freshman Thomas Perrot. Also competing in Mobile will be sophomore Alex Hoffman and freshman John Luke Tyner in the two-round USA Individual Tournament on the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course (par 71, 7,158 yards). Live scoring will not be done for the individual tournament.
The tournament will begin on Monday at 8 a.m. (CT) with a shotgun start on the par 72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course. The first day will include 36 holes while the final day will have a start on holes 1 and 10 for the final 18 at 8 a.m.
Last Time Out
Last week, the Tigers finished 11th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational with a 54-hole score of 868 (+28). Memphis was led by junior Grant Milner, who tied for 25th with a 6-over-par 216. Junior Will Pearson and freshman Thomas Perrot tied for 33rd with a 217 while sophomore Cory Gaylord tied for 37th with a 218. Senior Lexus Keoninh rounded out the team with a 228 to tie for 69th.
Setting Their Mark
Will Pearson, Grant Milner, Steve Lee and Carlson Cox rank in the top-10 all-time in lowest career average. Jonathan Fly is the school record holder with a 72.3 average during his three years (2010-12) at the U of M. Pearson is currently tied for fourth with a 73.8 alongside former teammate Jack Belote while Milner holds a 74.0 average for eighth-best in Memphis history. Lee is averaging 74.3 and Cox has a 74.4 for ninth and tenth, respectively.
Following the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, the Tigers will head to Cajun Country for the 28th Annual Louisiana Classics, Mar. 4-5, at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette.
