Men's Golf to Make Third-Straight NCAA Tournament Appearance
May 6, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Memphis men's golf team will be making their third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance after being selected as the No. 11 seed in the West Regional, which is set to begin May 16-18 at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.
The NCAA field is made up of 81 teams competing in six regionals across the country. The top five teams from each regional will move on to play at the NCAA Championships, May 28-June 2, at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.
Memphis is one of 14 teams in the West Regional with six of those teams earning automatic bids after winning their conference titles. In order of seeding, the teams in the West Regional include California (Pac- 12 Champion), TCU, USC, St. Mary's (West Coast Champion), Virginia Tech, BYU, North Texas (Sun Belt Champion), Baylor, San Diego State, Ball State, Memphis, Pacific (Big West Champion), Princeton (Ivy League Champion) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (Northeast Champion).
The Tigers have finished in the top ten in 11 tournaments this season, and have five top-five finishes. Memphis' best showing came at Auburn's Tiger Invitational in March where Memphis finished runner-up to Mississippi State while defeating five top-50 teams in a 15-team field.
This will be Memphis' 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history and its fourth appearance in the last six years. Head coach Grant Robbins has led the Tigers to postseason play in 2008 and from 2011-13 for the most appearances under one head coach in program history. Last season, the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in 24 years following a fifth-place finish at the Bowling Green Regional.
