Aug. 6, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Jonathan Fly fired rounds of 71-65-66-68 to beat out Hunter Green by three strokes and claim victory at the TGA State Amateur Championship Friday afternoon. The event was held on the Foxland Course at the Club at Fairvue Plantation in Gallatin, Tenn. “It feels great to win with all the history associated with this event,” said Fly. “This week was a lot hard work and also a lot of fun, but I’m just glad to get back in the winner’s circle.” Fly was joined by two other Tigers in the top five, as junior Jack Belote finished third after turning scores of 67-70-72-66. Grant Milner, who led the championship after two rounds, finished fifth after carding rounds of 66-69-75-70. “I’m really proud of Jack and Grant,” said Fly. “They both worked really hard this week as well, and I think it just shows that we have a chance to do some great things this upcoming season.” Carlson Cox and Steve Lee also had strong showings in the event, as each posted tournament totals of 285 to grab a share of 12th position. Kody Alexander, who qualified for the U.S. Amateur last Monday, finished in a tie for 34th with rounds of 73-70-78-71. Tiger signee Cory Gaylord turned in rounds of 78-71-77-71 to finish in a tie for 50th. Past champions of the TGA State Amateur Championship include Casey Wittenberg, Tim Jackson, and Cary Middlecoff among others.
