Men's Golf Faces Several C-USA Foes at Shoal Creek Intercollegiate
Sept. 23, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After a break from competition last week, the Memphis men's golf team looks to improve off a rough outing at the Gopher Invitational with the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 24-25. The Tigers will face another strong field on Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 7,234-yard Shoal Creek course in Birmingham, Ala.
"We are excited to be playing at Shoal Creek this weekend," said head coach Grant Robbins. "It is an incredible golf course and we will be competing against a strong field. We had a very competitive qualifying and I look for the guys to have a great week."
Former UAB golfer and current PGA star Graeme McDowell will serve as the official starter for the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. The first day of play will include 36 holes before the final 18 will be played Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The Tigers will face four conference foes at Shoal Creek with host UAB, Houston, Southern Miss and Tulsa. Also in the field will be Dartmouth, Kennesaw State, LSU, North Florida, North Texas and Southeastern Louisiana. Of the 11 teams competing, nine finished in the top-65 in Golfstat's final 2012 rankings. North Texas, who ranked No. 29 in Golfweek's preseason rankings, is the lone team from the field that the Tigers have faced this year with the Mean Green edging Memphis by 12 strokes at the Gopher Invitational two weeks ago.
At the Gopher Invitational, senior Steve Lee led Memphis in his fall debut firing a 227 with consistent rounds of 76, 76, and 75 to tie for 19th. Junior Grant Milner and senior Lexus Keoninh recorded low round scores for the Tigers with each having a 74 in one round.
