Keven Fortin-Simard Named Conference USA Golfer of the Week
Oct. 6, 2005 Memphis, Tenn. - Sophomore Keven Fortin-Simard of the Memphis men's golf team was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week on Thursday after his performance at the Memphis Intercollegiate earlier this week on Monday and Tuesday. Fortin-Simard's play gained him his second career individual tournament title and also helped lead the Tigers to their first tournament victory of the year. Fortin-Simard, who finished in fifth place at the stroke portion of the U.S. Amateur over the summer before bowing out in the first round of match play, added the Memphis Intercollegiate to the Radrick Farms Intercollegiate from last year as his individual tournament titles. He equalled his career low round by shooting a five-under 67 in the second round of the event and finished the tournament at eight-under 208 (69-67-72), one of just four players to finish the event under par at the par 72, 7,249 yard Colonial Country Club South Course. The first place finish was Fortin-Simard's sixth top 10 finish of his career and the fourth top five finish. His winning score of 208 was six shots better than last year's winning score in the tournament. His performance helped the Tigers to a five-shot victory in the event, the first tournament win of the year for the Tigers. Fortin-Simard currently leads Memphis in stroke average through two tournaments at 71.
