Senior Jordan Payne fired a two-round total of 145 (73-72) to lead the Tigers into second place after two rounds at the Memphis Intercollegiate. The tournament is being held at the par-72 7,334-yard Colonial Country Club.
On a day that saw wind gusts of 25-30 mph, Payne was able to keep things under control to card a total of 145 and finish in a tie for fifth.
"Jordan really stuck with it out there today. Conditions were rough and it was easy to let things go of control and head downhill in a hurry. However, he kept a cool head and grinded it out," said Tiger head coach Grant Robbins.
Fellow senior Brad Benjamin had a strong second round to post 148 (76-72) and get into a tie for 13th. He is followed by freshman Jack Belote whose 149 (74-75) left him in a tied for 20th. Jeff Hall carded a 155 (76-79) and is in 55th. Mark Trow rounds out the top-5 after shooting 156 (83-73) and finishing in 58th.
Memphis shot a team total of 591 (299-292) and is in second place.
"Overall, I'm proud of the way our team played out there today. This is a really tough field, so to be in second after two rounds is definitely a good thing. Also, we're only three shots back, so there's no telling what could happen tomorrow," said Coach Robbins.
Ohio State leads the tournament after firing a two-round total of 588 (299-289). Memphis is two shots back in second, followed by Mississippi State 594 (301-293). Vaughn Snyder of Ohio State leads the individual competition by six strokes after firing a 138 (68-70).
