Grant Milner Named C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week
Oct. 17, 2012
IRVING, Texas - Junior Grant Milner was named the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. The honor is Milner's first of his career and the first for the men's golf team this season.
The Knoxville, Tenn. native captured his first collegiate individual title last weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, firing a 10-under-par 206. Milner began the tournament carding 67's in the first and second rounds, and shot a 72 in the final round of play to win by two strokes over No. 28 Evan Beck of Wake Forest. Overall, Milner finished with 17 birdies, including eight in the second round. Milner's 54-hole score tied him for fourth in school history while his 36-hole score of 134 placed him second in school history.
"It means a lot to get my first collegiate victory," Milner said. "I've been waiting three years for it and have worked very hard to get there. Getting C-USA Golfer of the Week is just a bonus. None of this would be possible without Coach (Grant) Robbins and my teammates."
Milner and the Tigers faced tough competition at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, going up against eight top-100 golfers and five top-40 teams. Memphis finished three strokes off of first to take fourth, falling to No. 12 Missouri, No. 31 Tennessee and UNC-Wilmington, while defeating No. 21 Wake Forest, No. 37 Coastal Carolina and No. 39 Virginia Tech.
Memphis will close out the fall season at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, Oct. 19-20, at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.
