Nov. 4, 2004
Memphis, Tenn. - Senior Allan Thomas of the men's golf team was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Month for October on Thursday for his performance in all three of the Tigers' tournaments in October. Thomas put together a pair of top five finishes, including the individual medal at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Thomas was the only player to shoot under par in the tournament at the Colonial Country Club in early October as he led the Tigers to their second straight tournament win on October 4-5. After struggling in the first round with a 77, Thomas came back and fired a second round 70 and a third round of 5-under 67, tied for the lowest round of the tournament, to finish at 2-under 214 and claim the individual medal. His final round 67 helped lead the Tigers to a seven-shot win in the tournament after they trailed by two strokes entering the final round. The individual medal was the first of his career.
A week later at the Missouri Bluffs Challenge, Thomas two round of under par to finish alone in fifth place at 2-under 211 and help lead Memphis to its third straight tournament win. Once again, the Tigers rallied from a deficit entering the final round and won the tournament by nine strokes at 10-under 842. Thomas shot his second round of below 70 of the year with a first round 69 and also shot a 70 in the final round. The two top five finishes were the first two of his career and were just his second and third career top 10 finishes.
Finally, at the Landfall Tradition last weekend, Thomas was one of the bright spots for the Tigers, who struggled to an 11th place finish. He was the Tigers' top finisher in 28th place along with Keven Fortin-Simard at 4-over 220. He shot a 70 in the first round, one of only three subpar rounds put together by the Tigers at the event.
Thomas and the Tigers will next compete at the Rice Intercollegiate on February 7-8 in Houston, Texas.
