Nov. 19, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis head men's golf coach Grant Robbins announced Monday the signing of Kevin Lee and Lars Van Meijel, who will join the Tigers program for the 2013-14 season.
The brother of current Tiger senior Steve Lee and a native of Galatin, Tenn., Lee is currently a senior at Hendersonville High School where he was a 2012 all-state selection as well as a three-time qualifier for the Tennessee State Open. In September, Lee finished fourth at the 2012 Tennessee AAA State Championship with a 36-hole score of 141, one stroke off from a playoff. This year, Lee won the Tennessee Schoolboys Championship and finished ninth at the Bubba Conlee National Junior Tournament. In 2010, Lee took second at the Tennessee AAA State Championship to help Hendersonville claim the state title.
"Kevin is someone I've been recruiting for a while," Robbins said. "He has great fundamentals and a very solid swing. He has the potential to be an outstanding college player."
A native of Best, Netherlands, and a product of the International School of Padua, Van Meijel is the second-ranked junior and fifth-ranked amateur player in the country. Van Meijel was a member of the Dutch National Team, representing The Netherlands at the 2011 and 2012 European Boys Championships as well as the 2012 Talihade Cup in Argentina. Van Meijel has claimed several top-10 honors during his playing days, finishing runner-up at the 2012 Dutch Junior Open and fifth at the 2012 German Junior Masters Tournament and the 2011 Italian International Amateur Tournament. Van Meijel also added an eighth-place finish in the stroke play portion of the 2012 Argentina Amateur Tournament.
"Lars is solid in every aspect of his game," Robbins said. "He is one of the top players in Europe and brings a great deal of experience having competed all over the world."
