Memphis Soccer Receives Preseason Honors

Junior forward Marks Sherrod was tabbed Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday. Sherrod and junior midfielder Liam Collins were named to the 2012 Preseason All-C-USA Men's Soccer Team as voted on by the coaches. Men's head coach Richie Grant talked to the Memphis Tiger Network about the awards

Named Second Team All-American Athletic Conference ... Played in 18 matches and made 17 starts for the Tigers ... Led the team with 10 assists and tied for second on the team with 12 points ... Tied with former Tiger Dayton O'Brien for most career assists in school history (34) ... Notched assists in eight different matches and had two assists in two different games (vs. Charlotte on Sept. 15 and vs. UCA on Oct. 16) ... Raised his career assist total to 24 moving him to second all-time in program-history behind former Tiger Dayton O'Brein (34 assists) ... Notched two assists against Wisconsin (8/24) on goals by Chandler Gagnon and Mark Sherrod ... Named to the Diadora-Spinks/Furman Gray Memorial All-Tournament Team for his play against Charleston (9/7) and #23 Furman (9/9) ... His 11 assists is the third-most in a season in schoolhistory, trailing Memphis Hall of Famers Dayton O'Brien (14 in 2004) and Rogerio Lima (12 in 1997) ... The team's second-leading scorer with 13 points ... Started all 18 contests, playing over 1,600 minutes ... Set up Mark Sherrod's game-winning goal in the season opener against Lipscomb ... Scored the game-winner off of a free kick at Belmont and assisted on Lewis Ellis' first collegiate goal ... Posted an assist on Sherrod's game-winner vs. Missouri State ... Notched a pair of assists on two Sherrod goals against South Carolina ... Recorded three assists -- all on Sherrod goals -- against Nebraska-Omaha ... Assisted on J.J. 2010 (Freshman):

Started 16 of 17 games at midfield ... Led the Tigers with six assists, including five in the last two matches ... Netted first career-goal in his first match against Belmont. Joining teammate Austin Gross in becoming the first Tigers to score in their first college match since Kevin Walsh and Jamie Gilbert scored in the 2006 season opener against Louisville ... A 98th-minute golden goal against Central Arkansas gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Bears ... Career-best, three-assists contest came against Alabama A&M, when he assisted Mark Sherrod's two goals, Cody McCoy's game-winner ... Assisted on both goals in the Tigers' 2-0 win against UAB on the Fox Soccer Channel NSCAA Game of the Week, finding J.J. Greer for the winner and Mark Sherrod for the insurance goal.
