Robert Sausaman joined his alma mater's staff for the 2010 season. Sausaman spend the 2010 season as a graduate student at the U of M in sports and leisure commerce and business administration.

For 2011, Sausaman was in charge of a defensive group, featuring returners J.J. Greer, Jordan Johnson and Thomas Shannon, as well as two-time Tennessee Player of the Year Chandler Gagnon.

The Tigers' backline was instrumental during the 2011 campaign in securing six shutouts on the season, the most by a Memphis squad since 2004. The team held No. 18 Bradley without a single shot on goal.

Behind the strength of the defensive backline, Memphis posted a 366:42-minute shutout streak, a streak that began during the Marshall contest, included games against FIU, UNO and Tulsa and ended with a penalty-kick goal in the 90th minute at UAB. The penalty kick at UAB was the only goal surrendered by the Tigers in a span of 484:38-minutes from the end of the Marshall game until the middle of the UCA contest.

Under Sausaman's direction, Memphis sophomore J.J. Greer converted from forward to the backline and earned the final C-USA Defender of the Week award in 2010.

As a defender under Richie Grant from 2005-08, Sausaman understands the high level of expectations Grant holds his players and coaches to. Sausaman routinely met and exceeded those expectations during his four years wearing the blue and gray, starting 43 of his 67 appearances during his playing career. Sausaman tallied three goals and four assists during his four years of back-line work for the Tigers.

Sausaman was part of a stout 2007 defense as a junior that held opponents to a conference-low 0.89 goals-per-game and helped earn seven shutouts for the Tigers. In 2008, Sausaman was one of six senior captains for a veteran Memphis squad.
