MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Sophomore Thomas Hyland led the Memphis Tiger attack with one goal and freshman goalkeeper Michael Goodlett recorded four first half saves to lead the Tigers to a 1-1 tie in the exhibition opener at Christian Brothers University Wednesday night.
"It's always good to get out there against some different competition. It was good to see that Thomas (Hyland) had a great finish to put us in front," head coach Richie Grant said. "I thought we kept the ball much better in the second half, and we really finished strong."
Sophomore Robert Sausamann and Freshman Wade Wonderlin both had good scoring opportunities late in the second half to keep the pressure on CBU. However, Hyland got the Tigers off to a quick start when he headed a ball through heavy traffic into the back of the net 5:28 into the game.
Freshman goalkeeper Michael Goodlett logged over 57 minutes and was tested early on in his first collegiate match. Mississippi's 2006 Mr. Soccer recorded four saves and did not allow a goal in just over one half of play.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday when they open the home exhibition schedule against Lipscomb at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and admission is free.
