No. 15 Saint Louis Defeats Men's Soccer 3-1 in Exhibition Opener
Memphis, Tenn. - The No. 15 Saint Louis Billikens defeated the Memphis Tigers 3-1 in Saturday night's exhibition opener at Mike Rose Stadium. The Billikens scored two goals in the first and tacked on one goal in the second half. Junior Chandler Gagnon converted a penalty kick for the Tigers late in the second half.
Early in the first half, senior Mark Sherrod was able to put pressure on the Saint Louis goal and forced two superb saves from Saint Louis goalie Nick Shackelford.
In the 15th minute, Saint Louis earned a corner kick and Tyler David converted for the Billikens after an initial save by Cody Uzcategui.
The remainder of the first half was back and forth, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. In the 45th minute, Kingsley Bryce put the Billikens ahead 2-0 after a misplay by Uzcategui.
Uzcategui was tested several times in the second half and made a series of good saves, including one early in the second half off of a shot by Saint Louis forward Jair Minors.
Raymond Lee capped off the scoring for Saint Louis with three minutes left to give Saint Louis a 3-0 lead.
Newcomer Fakhry Khulfan created several scoring opportunities for the Tigers, and earned a penalty late in the second half. Gagnon finished with a powerful shot past Billikens goalie David Andre.
The Tigers face the No. 14 Tulsa Golden Hurricane in Tulsa on Thursday night. Kickoff in Tulsa is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
