No. 14 Tulsa Defeats Men's Soccer 3-1 in Exhibition Finale

TULSA, Okla. - The No. 14 Tulsa Golden Hurricane defeated the Memphis Tigers 3-1 at Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on Thursday night. Senior Austin Gross scored in the second half for the Tigers, but Tulsa added a goal late for the victory.
The exhibition contest is the last game before Memphis opens the regular season next weekend in California.
The Golden Hurricane netted two goals in the second half to secure the victory.
Memphis created scoring chances throughout the game. The Tigers finished with 11 shots on goal, but Tulsa goalie Cody Mumma made 10 saves on the night. Fakhry Khulfan finished with three shots on goal, while Chandler Gagnon put two attempts on target.
Memphis goalie Conor Hurley matched Mumma for most of the first half. In the 35th minute, Tulsa took a 1-0 lead after a goal by sophomore Cristian Mata. Mata converted after a cross by Byron Knowles-Ramirez.
Just before halftime, Fakhry Khulfan created two chances for Memphis, but both of Khulfan’s shots were kept out by Tulsa.
Akeil Barrett gave Tulsa a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute, and the game remained that way for a major portion of the second half. Gross netted his goal in the 76th minute, as Memphis continued to pressure the Tulsa defense.
However, Mata put in a second goal in the 83rd minute to put Tulsa back in front by two goals. Mumma made three more saves in the final five minutes to preserve the 3-1 victory.
The Tigers open the 2013 regular season at the Ryan Rossi Memorial Tournament in Northridge, Calif. Memphis takes on Cal State Fullerton on Friday, August 30, at 7:30 p.m. CT.
