Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In the opening match of the 2011 season, Memphis earned the 4-1 win over visiting Lipscomb. Senior forward Parker Duncan was aggressive from the onset, netting two goals in the contest. Sophomore forward Mark Sherrod and junior midfielder Andreas Guentner also found the net for the Tigers.

Senior Cody McCoy played a ball deep into the Lipscomb zone for sophomore Mark Sherrod. Duncan made an uncontested run into the middle of the box, collected the pass from Sherrod and laced a shot past the defenseless keeper.

Sherrod's goal came in the 51st minute after the Tigers earned a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Liam Collins served the ball into the box for Sherrod, who beat the goalkeeper to the far post.

Just ten minutes later, junior-defender Jordan Johnson played a ball into the box for Guentner. Guentner fired a shot from eight-yards out to the back-left post.

Lipscomb finally got on the board when Jeremy Reid collected an errant clear from the Tigers and beat Memphis' goalkeeper Conor Hurley. The Bisons goal came in the 73rd minute.

Memphis wasn't finished with the scoring though. In the 85th minute, Guentner beat his defender one-on-one into the box and was taken down from behind earning the foul and penalty-kick. Senior defender Thomas Shannon stepped up to take the penalty-kick. Lipscomb's goalkeeper got a hand on the shot and deflected it off the post. Duncan collected the shot and booted it into the back of the net.

Memphis scored four goals in the season opener for the second-consecutive year. The Tigers defeated Belmont 4-0 last season at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

The Tigers will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Belmont for a 7 p.m. clash. Memphis returns home to play Missouri State on Sunday, also at 7 p.m. Stay tuned to GoTigersGo.com for more information on all Tiger athletics.
