Tigers Shut Out Centenary, 1-0
Sept. 3, 2004
A free kick goal by Dayton O'Brien helped the University of Memphis men's soccer team blank Centenary College 1-0 on Friday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
In the opening day of the sixth-annual Memphis Diadora Tournament, the Tigers (1-0-0) out shot the Gents (0-1-0) 25 to 5. The U of M held Centenary to only one shot the entire first half while Memphis took 10. Only the goal by junior forward O'Brien was a shot on goal for the Tigers.
Senior goalie Sebastian Vecchio earned his first win for Memphis in the season opener. It is his second shutout in as many games going back to the preseason 1-0 win over Southwest Missouri State. None of the Gents five shots were on goal.
The Tigers had plenty of chances to score in the second half, but came up empty in 15 attempts, four of which were on goal. Centenary nearly doubled Memphis' fouls in the second with 13 to the Tigers 7. The U of M also outdistanced the Gents in corner kicks, 11-2.
Memphis will next play Oral Roberts on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap of the Memphis Diadora Tournament's final day. The winner between the two schools will earn the tournament's title. Oral Roberts (1-0-0) beat Western Kentucky (0-1-0), 2-0, in the tournament's early game on Friday. WKU will play Centenary in the 5 p.m. game on Saturday.
