Men's Soccer Defeated by Evansville, 1-0 In ProRehab Aces Classic Championship
Sept. 21, 2003 EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- - For the first time in 27 contests the University of Memphis men's soccer team was shutout as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Evansville in the championship match of the ProRehab Aces Classic on Sunday. Goalkeeper Sebastian Vecchio and defenders Graham Gibbs and Justin Dyer each were named to the All-ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic Team. Memphis and Evansville played to a scoreless tie until the 87th minute when sophomore defender Lance Muckey blasted a 15-yard line drive from the left side past Vecchio. Senior defender Dusty Brezovsky's attempt at a team save was not in time as the ball had crossed the line for the score. The Tigers, who drop to 3-3 on the year, were outshot by the Purple Aces 19-14 in the back-and-forth match. Memphis, who has never beaten Evansville, had not been shutout since a 1-0 loss to Cincinnati on Oct. 1, 2001. Evansville claims the Classic title, while Memphis finishes as runner-up after defeating Iona, 2-0 on Friday. Iona got a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Drexel to take third and Drexel rounds out the field with a pair of losses. Memphis returns home this weekend for the first of a two-game set of league matches against ECU and Cincinnati on Sept. 26 and Oct. 1. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. for Friday's matchup with ECU.
