@UMTiger Soccer Defeats Cincinnati 2-0 In American Athletic Conference Opener
Sept. 21, 2013
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Mark Sherrod scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another as the No. 20 Tigers (5-1-1) defeated Cincinnati (2-4-1) 2-0 on Saturday night.
Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui made seven saves and picked up his fourth shutout of the season.
The Tigers put pressure on the Cincinnati defense just after the opening kickoff. Simon Estornel put a shot on target just 24 seconds into the game and forced a save from Cincinnati goalie Alex Gill.
Just a minute later, Sherrod put a shot on goal but was denied by Gill.
In the fifth minute, Liam Collins and Raul Gonzalez set up Sherrod's first goal of the 2013 season. Collins got the ball to Gonzalez who crossed it to Sherrod, and the redshirt senior was able to finish and put Memphis up 1-0.
Gonzalez picked up his second assist of the season, while Collins notched his team-leading fifth helper of the campaign.
The Tigers doubled their lead in the 22nd minute through freshman Hunter Danna. Danna picked up his team-leading third goal of the year on an assist by Sherrod.
With a three-point performance, Sherrod has 36 career goals, which ranks fifth in school history. He has 84 career points, and has moved ahead of former Tiger Dayton O'Brien (82 career points) into fifth in Memphis history.
Late in the first half, Cincinnati had their best scoring chance on a free-kick in the final third of the pitch. However, the Memphis defense was able to clear the ball and maintain the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Uzcategui made four of his seven saves after halftime to keep the clean sheet. With four shutouts through the first seven games, the Tigers have the most since the 1992 squad posted six in their first seven matches.
The Tigers move to 1-0 in American Athletic Conference play.
Memphis returns to home Tuesday night and will take on the Mercer Bears. First kick at Mike Rose Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission is FREE for all fans.
