Memphis Drops Conference Finale at SMU, 2-1
Nov. 4, 2011
DALLAS - Memphis took an early one-goal lead on SMU, but was unable to hold the lead as the Tigers lost, 2-1. Freshman forward Lewis Ellis tallied the lone-Tiger goal.
Ellis put Memphis on the scoreboard in the second minute off of a pass from Mark Sherrod. Liam Collins played a ball into the box that was knocked into the air. Sherrod put a head on the ball and sent it to Ellis, who flipped the ball of SMU goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra. The second goal, Ellis' second of the season, put Memphis up 1-0 early in the game.
With the assist, Sherrod's fourth of the season, he tied former Memphis-great Sean Frasor with 42 points on the year. The sophomore striker already broke the single-season record for goals scored in a season.
SMU equalized in the 37th minute off of an unassisted-goal from sophomore forward Juan Castillo. The Mustangs capitalized exactly one minute later on a goal by senior midfielder Arthur Ivo. Ben Hill sent a through ball to Ivo, who went around Memphis goalkeeper Conor Hurley.
Memphis trailed SMU in shots, 16-13, but had a decisive advantage in corner kicks, 11-1. Hurley notched six saves on the evening, tying his season-high set against Missouri State.
The Tigers will make the trek to Tulsa, Okla. for the Conference USA Tournament. Memphis awaits the result of tomorrow's match between No. 22 UCF and Marshall in order to finalize the seeding and determine their opponent.
