Jan. 16, 2014
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Memphis men’s soccer standout Mark Sherrod was drafted by the Houston Dynamo in the second round of the 2014 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, the MLS announced Thursday afternoon.
The Dynamo selected Sherrod with the 32nd overall pick, making the Knoxville, Tenn. native the sixth player selected from the American Athletic Conference in this year’s draft.
Sherrod finished his standout career at Memphis ranked third in program history in both goals (42) and points (96). He was also a three-time all-conference selection and a two-time NSCAA All-American while at Memphis.
Earlier this month, Sherrod became the first player in program history to earn an invitation to the MLS pre-draft combine, held last week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Sherrod becomes the third Tiger to be drafted and the fourth player in the program’s history, along with Dayton O’Brien, Andy Metcalf and Daniel Dobson, to make it to the MLS. O'Brien was a third-round selection (33rd overall in the 2006 SuperDraft) of the Columbus Crew, while Metcalf was selected in the 2006 supplemental draft by D.C. United. Dobson played for the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting KC) during his time in the MLS.
The Houston Dynamo open the 2014 season on Mar. 8, 2014 against the New England Revolution.
