MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men’s soccer team has received a National Letter of Intent from student-athlete Alec Velez for 2014-15, the University of Memphis Athletic Department announced on Thursday.

Velez, a central midfielder, played his first two high school seasons at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn. While at Ravenwood, Velez earned two varsity letters in soccer, and was a part of District, Regional and Sectional winning teams during those two seasons.

Velez spent the last two years attending school and playing soccer at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, a boarding school in Faribault, Minn.

On the club circuit, Velez was a member of Brentwood Soccer Club in Tennessee for seven years. The team won four state championships during Velez’s seven years with the club. Over the past two years, Velez played one season with Shattuck-St. Mary’s U18 White, and one year with Shattuck-St. Mary’s U18 DA Maroon.

The son of Erwin and Tracy Velez, Alec Andres Velez was born in Miami, Fla. Velez also enjoys baseball, working out and creative writing. He was a Dean’s List selection at Ravenwood High School during both his freshman and sophomore years.
