Tiger Alumni Capture Inaugural Tim McCage Tournament Title
March 3, 2001 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis Tiger soccer team hosted the 1st Annual Tim McCage Tournament on Saturday. The 20-team field was comprised of squads ranging from: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and also a few local teams from the Memphis-Shelby County area. The tournament matches were played with a 7 v 7 format. Memphis's alumni squad took home the inaugural perpetual trophy after knocking off Southwest Missouri State (comprised of active players), 3-2 in the final. Former Tiger Tommy White was selected as tournament MVP after scoring two goals in the final and scoring a hat-trick in the semi-final match which resulted in a 3-2 victory over cross-town rival Christian Brothers University. The U of M alumni squad consisted of the five seniors from last seasons squad and also included four current Tigers and one alumni. The five seniors included: Nick Glaser, David Medlock, Ryan Schwaigert, Michael Shipman and White. Current Tigers on the squad were: rising senior Darren Bevard and rising sophomores Dusty Brezovsky, Nelson Ennis and Josh Isaacs. Former Tiger midfielder Carl Schmitt rounded out the team. The Tim McCage 7 v 7 Tournament will now become an annual event and will continue to be hosted by the U of M.
"It turned out to be great success," said Memphis Head Coach Richie Grant. " It was great to have the McCage family here to present the trophy. We look forward to hosting this tournament for many years to come."
