Men's Soccer Hosts Irish School at Mike Rose
March 7, 2005
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - For the fifth-consecutive year, the University of Memphis men's soccer team will host Colaiste Ide in a spring match-up at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Monday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
The Tigers are 3-0-1 all-time against the Irish prep school. Over the years, the school has been a hot bed for Memphis soccer recruits, producing head coach Richie Grant as well as current Tiger players Michael Coburn, Gary Connolly, Cormac McArdle and Gavin McInerney.
"This is a fairly intense game for us," Grant said. "The rivalry between the two teams really brings an intense spirit into the competition. The games against Colaiste Ide are pretty consistent to what you see in college. It's always a fast paced and physical game."
Also making an appearance at the game will be the Wolf River Pipe Band, an area Scottish pipe band. The band will entertain the crowd prior to the game as it leads the two teams onto the field and will also perform at halftime.
"We're looking forward to having the band at the game," Grant said. "It should create a fun and exciting atmosphere for the crowd."
Last year Memphis won the game 2-0 behind second half goals from Andy Metcalf and Daniel Dobson. In the four games between the two schools, the Tigers have outscored Colaiste Ide 11-4. The one tie came in 1-1 draw in 2001. Memphis is 2-1 in spring games this year after winning the Memphis Cup in February.
