March 7, 2014
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Memphis men’s soccer standout J.J. Greer has signed a professional contract with the Charlotte Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Pro League, the Eagles organization announced Friday.
Greer, a Memphis native and Christian Brothers High School graduate, played in 72 games and made 60 starts at Memphis from 2009-2013. Greer scored three goals and had nine assists in his Tigers career, and saw time all over the pitch in his four seasons on campus.
Greer was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team in 2009 after leading Memphis with five assists. Greer scored his first career goal against UAB on Sept. 11, 2009.
After spending a majority of his first season in the midfield, Greer made the move to defender in 2010 and became a key contributor in the Tigers’ back line for the next three seasons. As a sophomore, Greer posted one goal and three assists and appeared in 17 games.
Greer earned NSCAA All-Midwest Second Team and All-Conference USA Second Team honors as a central defender in 2011. During his junior season, Greer scored one goal and was a crucial figure in helping the Tigers secure six clean sheets and post a shutout streak of 366:42 during the season.
After receiving a medical redshirt in 2012, Greer concluded his time at Memphis with a strong senior season in 2013. The senior made 17 starts last season and played the full 90 minutes or more in 14 of the Tigers’ 18 matches, including a season-high 110 minutes against ETSU on Sept. 13.
Greer also played in 12 games for the Portland Timbers U-23 team after the 2013 season and participated in the 2013 USL PRO Combine before signing his contract.
Greer and the Charlotte Eagles open the 2014 season on April 4.
