U of M to Play CBU in Annual Tim McCage Cup
March 27, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's soccer team will head to Christian Brothers University for the annual Tim McCage Cup between the two-Bluff City colleges on Wednesday. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. (CT).
Up through the 2000 season, Memphis and CBU met each fall during the regular season in the annual Mayor's Cup. Starting in 2001, the Mayor's Cup was moved to the spring, renamed the Memphis Cup and featured round-robin play between Memphis, CBU and Rhodes College. The event was eventually renamed in honor of former Memphis player Tim McCage and is now only contested between Memphis and CBU.
McCage played for the U of M in 1990, netting one goal against Rhodes College in the Mayor's Cup and collecting three assists on the season. McCage passed away in an accident during Spring Break of his freshman year.
Memphis has played a spring schedule that included a match against Bethel College and a Spring Break trip to Brazil, where the team faced three professional squads. Following the match against CBU, the U of M will wrap up its spring schedule against UAB in the annual Battle for the Bones in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday March 31.
