March 30, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Head Coach Richie Grant has received commitments from Austin Stone, Jeremiah Wright and Owen Kalis to join the men's soccer team for the upcoming 2012 season. The three new commits join Quincy Thomas, Jordan Cuckler, Chris Gardea and Jack Goldberg to bring Grant's 2012 recruiting class to seven players.
A native of Alcoa, Tenn., Stone comes to the U of M from Alcoa High School, where he is currently playing his fourth season of varsity soccer. Entering his senior season, he has already set the record for most assists in a career with 27 and he is nearing the school record for career-goals scored with 48. Stone is a two-time TSSAA All-State honoree. He played club soccer for FC Alliance 94 Black from 2005-12.
The seventh addition to the 2012 class is Wright, a center-forward from Columbia Central High School located in Columbia, Tenn. Wright, who led his team in scoring in 2011, has twice been given all-district honors. He played club soccer for Brentwood Elite in 2010-11 and earlier this year recorded a hat trick in the first 15 minutes of a match.
Kalis comes to Memphis from Jesuit College Prep in Plano, Texas, where he starred at left back. He played club soccer on the 2011-12 Dallas Texans and the Dallas Texans Academy teams. Kalis' brother, Ian, played three years at SMU after transferring from Duke and was selected by FC Dallas in this year's MLS Supplemental Draft.
