Richie Grant and the men's soccer program will host the 12th Annual Tommy Smith Banquet on Tuesday, April 10, in the Penny Hardaway Hall of Fame Assembly Room. Justin Fuente, head football coach at the U of M, will serve as the guest speaker.
The event begins with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., with the dinner and program scheduled to commence at 7:30. Tickets are $20 per individual and $250 per table. A silent auction will be held featuring an autographed Tim Howard MLS match ball and an autographed Real Madrid jersey. Please contact men's soccer assistant coach Nick Glaser at (901) 678-5949 or firstname.lastname@example.org to R.S.V.P.
Each year the men's soccer program holds the Tommy Smith Banquet, named in honor of the former Memphis great, to reflect upon the accomplishments of the season and to distribute honors and accolades earned by the student-athletes. Tommy Smith, who passed away on March 18, 2000, played in 77 games for the U of M from 1992-95, tallying 15 goals and 11 assists.
One of the awards bestowed at the banquet is the Tommy Smith Award, established to honor the player who exemplifies the characteristics demonstrated by Smith during his career, high academic standards, dedication, love of the game and sportsmanship.
Glaser was the first recipient of the award in 2000 and assistant coach Robert Sausaman received the award in 2007. Graduating seniors Thomas Shannon (2009) and Cody McCoy (2010) are the last two recipients.
