Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis soccer team received a commitment from local standout Corey Shumate for the 2000 season.

Shumate prepped at Bartlett High under coach David Kiser, where he led them to the state quarterfinals in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He was selected to the Best of the Preps All-metro team in 1999. A four-year letterman, Shumate was selected to the All-district Tournament team in 1999 and All-district in 1998. He was a member of the Tennessee ODP team in 1998 that won the Sub-regional championship and participated in the regional camp that same year.

"We are extremely excited to have landed Corey," said Tiger head coach Richie Grant. "He is a hard working lad who we expect to make a difference on the field for us this season."

Shumate is the seventh signee of the summer for the Tigers, and he joins other Memphis area standouts Grant Paule and Clark Talley in the incoming freshman class.

Memphis opens their season at home against Belmont University in the Memphis Invitational Tournament on September 1st.
