Tiger Soccer Players and Coaches Host City-Sponsored Camp
July 21, 2000
Memphis, Tenn. -
The University of Memphis Men's Soccer team and coaching staff helped out with Mayor Herenton's second annual Summer Youth Initiative by playing host to a soccer camp at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex this past week. The campers, consisting of over 200 youngsters, were introduced to or learned more about the game of soccer by participating in fun drills and working one-on-one with the coaching staff, who consisted of players from the Tiger soccer team. The camp was an opportunity for the team to participate in a community outreach and expose some of the city's youth to a game that may not otherwise be available to them. Head coach Richie Grant tried to keep the children's interest by involving them in much of the teaching and encouraging them to play along. Rather than lectures and demonstrations, the children spent much of the time at camp kicking and learning the basics of the world's most popular sport.
