MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As the 2013 season draws closer, nine returning Tigers are coming off of a summer playing in some of soccer’s most prestigious developmental leagues.

Sophomore defender Austin Stone played in 11 games for K-W United FC in the Premier Development League (PDL) and was named the team’s rookie of the year. This award is given to the top player in their first season in the PDL.

Fellow sophomore Quincy Thomas played with Force Football Club in the USL Super-20 League, as well as the Michigan Bucks of the PDL. Force FC won the USL Super-20 League Championship, and Thomas was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts as a central defender. Thomas also played in five games for the Bucks during the PDL season.

In addition to Stone and Thomas, seniors Liam Collins, Shane Keely, Mark Sherrod, J.J. Greer and Dennis Kennetz, along with juniors Cody Uzcategui and Wil Linder spent the summer playing in both the United States and Canada.

Collins and Keely played along with Stone for K-W United FC based in Waterloo, Ontario. The team finished the 2013 summer season with a record of 5-6-3.

Collins played in all 14 games and scored two goals, including a game-tying goal in the 90th minute against the Michigan Bucks on July 5. Keely played in six games and also scored a goal against the Bucks on June 1.

Sherrod and Greer were key contributors for the Portland Timbers U-23s PDL team this summer. The Timbers made the Western Conference Final before being eliminated by Victoria Highlanders FC on July 28.

Sherrod was twice named to Premier Development League Team of the Week during the season, and scored the game-winning goal for the Timbers in a 3-2 victory over the Sacramento Gold on May 14. Sherrod also led the team with two assists.

Greer played in 12 matches during the summer and started seven of those games. He was part of a defense that posted five shutouts, and the Timbers finished second in the Western Conference in goals allowed (12).

Kennetz played in 11 games for the Springfield Demize (PDL), scoring a goal in a June 22 match against the Thunder Bay Chill. Uzcategui was in goal for three games for Orlando City U23 (PDL) during the summer, and posted a shutout in a 5-0 win over the Mississippi Brilla on July 7.

Wil Linder played for Chattanooga FC of the National Premier Soccer League, and was a major contributor in the midfield.

The Tigers begin the exhibition season on August 17 with a home match against the Saint Louis Billikens. Kickoff at Mike Rose Stadium is set for 7 p.m. CT.
