Memphis Downs Mobile 4-0 in Exhibition Road Opener
MOBILE, ALA.- Memphis soccer took down the University of Mobile in its exhibition opener 4-0 behind a strong two-goal performance from junior Austin Gross on Saturday. The game provided the Tigers a chance to get every player some work as they wrapped up their first week of preseason camp.
Gross scored the first of his two goals on a shot that was initially saved by the Mobile goalkeeper. Gross collected the ball after the save at the top of the-18 yard box and booted it into an open net to give Tigers a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Paul Banks was credited with an assist on the play.
Freshman midfielder C.J. Zimmerman recorded Memphis' second score of the game on a Tigers corner-kick. After the ball was played into the box, Zimmerman buried a left-footed shot from the top six-yard box that found the net to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Gross registered the second of his two goals in the match on a corner-kick delivered soundly by Tigers freshman Simon Estornel. Gross attempted a header off the Estornel kick that was denied by the Mobile goalkeeper, Gross then headed the rebound in for the score to extend the Memphis lead to 3-0.
The Tigers' fourth goal of the game came in a two-on-one situation down the right side of the field. Freshman Quincy Thomas played the ball to Paul Banks who then beat the keeper to the lower left corner to put Memphis up 4-0.
