MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The U of M men's soccer team will embark on a nine-day exhibition tour of Ireland tomorrow and will play a total of five matches in just six days.
The overseas voyage marks the first international trip of any kind during the combined 19-year history of both the men and women's soccer programs at the University of Memphis.
Head coach Richie Grant, a Dublin, Ireland, native heads back towards his roots armed with a young and talented Tiger side who will look to build upon last season's 14-6-0 overall record with a successful tour of Ireland.
"Our whole squad is extremely excited and we appreciate all the many people involved who made this trip happen," said Grant. `It's a great opportunity to get five games under our belts plus the added commraderie that we will gain from this trip will help us in the long run . The tough competition can only help our program."
The reigning C-USA Coach of the Year has scheduled top Irish opponents from within the League of Ireland, which although technically is a professional league, contains teams made up of both professional and amateur players. The Tigers five-game tour will feature matches from August 17-22 with just one day off, in between. The schedule includes games against Dundalk on the 17th, Dublin City on the 18th, Bohemians on the 20th, Drogheda on the 21st and will end with a final match against Home Farm on the 22nd.
The team will conclude preseason workouts with a final practice tomorrow morning from 9-11 a.m. at Echles Field on the U of M campus, leaving town later that evening. The Tigers will then return to Memphis on August 24 and will have less than 24 hours to recouperate before taking the field on August 25th for a preseason match against local rival Christian Brothers University.
