Birmingham, Ala. - The Memphis men's soccer team kicks off the season with a non-league match against former conference rival UAB on Friday at West Campus Field at 7 p.m. The Tigers, who are 3-1-1 over the last five season-openers, look to build off the momentum from besting Christian Brothers on Saturday in the final preseason tune-up.
UAB returns six starters and 16 letterwinners off last season's squad. Moreover, the UAB Blazers are a well-balanced team as 11 members of the squad are sophomores, six juniors, five seniors and only four freshmen. UAB finished with a record of 12-5-1 and ranked 3rd in Conference USA with a record of 5-3-1.
Three upperclassmen Mulrooney is relying on for leadership early on are senior midfielder Chandler Gagnon, redshirt junior goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui and sophomore midfielder Raul Gonzalez. Gagnon has played in 53 career matches and made 48 starts while Uzcategui posted a 1.27 goals-against average and made 48 saves in his 17 starts last season. Gonzalez was named to the 2013 American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team.
The Tigers host their home opener Sept. 3 against SIU-Edwardsville. On Sept. 6, Memphis hosts Saint Louis as part of its 2014 Alumni Weekend. During that weekend, the Tigers will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their 2004 Conference USA regular-season and tournament championships. Both matches - Sept. 3 and 6 - are slated for 7 p.m. (CT) kick-offs. To learn more about the men's soccer team, visit GoTigersGo.com and follow @MemphisMSoccer on Twitter and Instagram.
