Tigers prep for Oral Roberts
Sept. 2, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis' men's soccer team, on the heels of a season-opening demolishing of Belmont, will host Oral Roberts, Friday, at 7 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Four Tigers scored goals in the season-opener, including freshmen Austin Gross and Liam Collins. Four freshmen (Collins, Gross, Will Garcia and Maxim Van Dyck) started their first match as Tigers, a good sign for the future of the squad. Sophomore Jordan Leedle, making just his second career start, silenced the Tigers and perennial all-conference selection Brandon Tarr. Leedle stopped five Tiger shots for his first career shutout and victory. The U of M now moves its attention to Oral Roberts, who downed Central Arkansas, 2-1, in its Wednesday opener. The Golden Eagles return second-team all-Summit League defender Tyler Vining, who will be relied on to tame the Tigers. Leading scorer Jarrett Hamilton will lead a Golden Eagle attack looking for the first score of the season against U of M. Live Stats, Live Chat and streaming video will be available during the match. Tickets will be sold at Mike Rose; admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 5-12 years old. All children under 5 get in free. Memphis to host Conference USA Tournament The University of Memphis is pleased to announce it has won the right to host the 2010 Conference USA Men's Soccer Tournament. The top six regular-season finishers will battle for the championship at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, Nov. 10-14. Grant approaches career wins mark
Coach Richie Grant enters play with 103 victories, seven shy of tying predecessor Chris Bartels for most in men's soccer history. Young talent Sixteen Tigers are in their first or second year in the program and many will be counted on to contribute in 2010. Among these are a superb 2009 freshman class that included JJ Greer, Hugo Mondragon, Andreas Guentner and Sherrod. Guentner and Greer were both named to the Conference USA all-freshman team in 2009. Safe Keeping Jordan Leedle, in just his second career start, shutout the Belmont Bruins to open the season to pick up his first career victory. Leedle had five saves in the match. Early attention Freshmen Liam Collins and Austin Gross didn't wait to make their mark on Memphis soccer, each scoring a goal in their first career match for the Tigers.
