MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The men's soccer team travels to Evansville, Ind., this weekend to take on IPFW and Mercer in the ProRehab Aces Classic hosted by the University of Evansville. The Tigers will take on IPFW's Mastodons tomorrow at 5:00 pm in an effort to break the trend of back-to-back double overtime ties.
Memphis hosted UCF last Saturday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex to kick off Conference USA play and recovered from an early 1-0 deficit to force overtime and then a 1-1 tie after two extra periods. The previous weekend the Tigers salvaged their trip to California with a scoreless tie against Cal State Northridge.
The Tigers are currently tied for the league lead with only four goals allowed, and Memphis goalkeeper Tyler Strom leads C-USA in both goals against average (0.71), save percentage (.850) and shutouts per game (0.5). Coach Grant's team is the least penalized in the league with 46 fouls in five matches, six offsides penalties and seven yellow cards.
Memphis has climbed to No. 5 in the National Soccer Coaches Association's (NSCAA) Midwest poll. The Tigers trail 2007 opponents Creighton, SMU and Tulsa.
The Mastodons enter the weekend with a 2-4-1 record and are coming off a 2-1 upset win over Oregon State. Mercer is 4-2 and heads to Evansville following a 1-0 loss to UAB. The Bears finished second at the UAB Classic last weekend after knocking off Alabama A&M.
