Tigers Prepare for Drake
MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Memphis (2-3-1) takes on Drake University (1-6-2) Saturday at Mike Rose Stadium with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Memphis has faced Drake three times in the program's history, with the Bulldogs holding a 2-1 advantage over the Tigers all-time. The last meeting between the two schools was on September 13, 2009 at the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic. On that day, the Tigers defeated then ranked No. 23 Drake 4-3.
Scouting the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs travel to Memphis with a record of 1-6-1 overall. Drake's one win came against Loyola. Their six losses include Cincinnati, Saint Louis, Marquette, Northwestern (OT), Northern Illinois (2 OT), William and Mary, and No.14 Old Dominion.
Head coach Sean Holmes is in his 14th-year as head coach of the Bulldogs, with a record of 123-124-29. In 19 years as head coach, Holmes carries a record of 201-150-30.
In 2012, the Bulldogs returned five starters, and 12 letterwinners from a squad that finished the 2011 campaign 11-8-1 overall.
Drake is a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. Last season the Bulldogs finished fourth in league play with a record of 3-3.
Michael Thaden leads the Bulldogs in goals (2), points (4) and shots (18). Addison Eck leads in assists (2).
Through nine games goalkeeper Rich Gallager has 48 saves, 17 goals against and a 1.79 goals-against average.
Last weekend the Tigers went 1-1 at the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic in Birmingham, Ala, finishing the event third overall. Memphis lost to No. 20 Washington 1-0 (OT), and picked up a win against Farileigh Dickinson University 1-0. For their efforts at the tournament Andreas Guentner and Quincy Thomas were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Against FDU the Tigers-defense recorded their first shutout of the season, for goalkeeper Conor Hurley it was his seventh career shutout wearing the Blue and Gray.
Through six games, goalkeeper Conor Hurley has 14 saves on the season, with 10 goals against and a goals-against average of 1.54.
Head coach Richie Grant is 14-13-3 all-time against teams from the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Tigers begin Conference USA play with back-to-back league games. Memphis returns to Mike Rose Stadium taking on Marshall, Wednesday, September 26, at 7 p.m. (CT). The Tigers then travel to Kentucky to take on the Wildcats, Sunday, September 30, at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
