MEMPHIS, Tenn- Memphis (6-6-3, 2-2-2 C-USA) takes on UAB (9-5-2, 4-3-0 C-USA), on Wednesday, in a key Conference USA showdown at Mike Rose Stadium. As the regular season winds down, Memphis needs to pick up points in the win column to ensure a berth in the C-USA Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. This will be the 34th-meeting between Memphis and UAB, with the Tigers holding a one-win advantage in the all-time series 17-16.
Scouting the Blazers • UAB comes into the contest with four league wins over FIU, South Carolina, Marshall and UCF. The Blazers three C-USA losses came at the hands of No. 19 SMU, Kentucky and Tulsa. • Head coach Mike Getman is in his 20th season at the helm for UAB. Getman carries an all-time record of 134-141-34 with the Blazers. • The Blazers return nine starters and 13 total letter winners from a squad that finished the 2011 campaign 13-5-3 overall and 6-1-1 (T-First) in league play. • Lemez Mladen leads UAB in goals (6). • Kofi Gyawu leads the team in assists (5) and points (15) • Goalkeeper Raphael Ville has allowed 21 goals and recorded 57 saves. Through 16 games, Ville carries a goals-against-average of 1.26.
Quick Kicks • Last time out Memphis defeated conference foe FIU 2-1 in double-overtime. In the Tigers ninth overtime match of the season, Benjamin Ciosanski notched two goals, including the golden goal in double-overtime. • In his first start at goalkeeper for the Tigers, Cody Uzcategui notched 3 saves and allowed one goal in Memphis’ win over FIU. Uzcategui now has five saves on the season in two games played. • Mark Sherrod leads the Tigers in goals (9) and points (22). • Liam Collins leads the team in assists (7). • This will be the 15th time head coach Richie Grant faces UAB on the pitch in the series history. Grant holds a record of 8-6-0 over the Blazers.
No Fear on Halloween Wednesday will be the fifth game in the program’s history to be played on Halloween. The last time the Tigers took the pitch on October 31, the result was a 0-3 loss to South Carolina. However, the Tigers carry an all-time record on Halloween of 3-1, including 3 shutouts against Alabama A&M (2007, 2-0), Oral Roberts (1999, 3-0) and UALR (1990, 3-0).
Taking on the Host This season UAB will host the Conference USA Men’s Soccer Championship. Since 2004, the Tigers have a regular season record of 4-3 against the host school during the season that school hosts tournament.
Multi-Goal Games Benjamin Ciosanski notched two goals, including the game-winner, against FIU (10/27). Two other Tigers have recorded multi-goal games this season. Mark Sherrod hauled in two against Tulsa (10/13), and Lewis Ellis found the net twice against Drake (9/22).
Tigers on FOX Soccer Channel Memphis’ regular season finale Friday against No. 19 SMU has been tabbed at the FOX Soccer Channel NSCAA Game of the Week. The game will be broadcast live from Mike Rose Soccer Stadium, marking the fourth time in the last five seasons the Tigers will play on a regional or national telecast.
