Chris Schmidt Named To Verizon Academic All-District IV Soccer Team

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior Chris Schmidt, a member of the University of Memphis men's soccer team, has been recognized for his performance both on and off the field as he was selected as a member of the 2002 Verizon University Division Men's Soccer Academic Al-District IV Team today by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in District IV.

The district squad is comprised of student-athletes from Division-I institutions in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be eligible, players must be a starter or important reserve player and maintain a 3.20 or high cumulative grade point average.

Schmidt has shown excellence both on and off the field. A senior Biology major from Clarksville, Tenn., Schmidt has maintained a 3.64 grade point average over his four years at the University of Memphis. On the field he had been the backbone of the Tiger squad for the past three seasons. The Tigers' captain and defensive anchor over the past two seasons, he has started in each of the Tigers last 50 matches dating back to his freshman campaign. Throughout his career on the field, Schmidt has tallied 20 points on eight assist and six goals, including five assists and two scores in this, his senior season.

The Verizon Academic All-District Team is in conjunction with the Verizon All-America program. First team selections will be shown on the national ballot for the Verizon Academic All-America Soccer Team to be announced on Monday, Nov. 25.
