ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Memphis men's soccer team travels to Orlando to open the inaugural American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship against UCF on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (9-7-1, 3-5-0) enters the conference tournament as the No. 6 seed, finishing the regular season with 9 points in league matches. The UCF Knights (7-4-5, 4-1-3) are the No. 3 seed after finishing the regular season with 15 points in conference action.
This will be the second meeting between the two schools this season. UCF defeated Memphis 1-0 in Orlando on Oct. 9. Sophomore forward Romario Williams scored the decisive goal on a free kick in the 49th minute for the Knights.
The match was even throughout, as both teams finished with 12 shots. Memphis had a 5-4 edge in shots on target. Late in the game, an attempt by Spencer Moeller was cleared off the line, and Raul Gonzalez struck a shot off the post in the 85th minute.
Williams leads the American Athletic Conference with nine goals and is second in the league in points with 20.
Mark Sherrod leads Memphis in goals and is tied for third in the league with seven goals. The senior forward ranks fourth in the conference in points with 16.
The quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament will be played at campus sites this weekend. The semifinals and championship game will be played Nov. 15 and Nov. 17 at Toyota Stadium, the home of the MLS club FC Dallas, in Frisco, Texas.
Kickoff for Saturday afternoon's match between the Tigers and Knights is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT.
